      Following The Winter Witch (2013), Brackston picks up the story five years after the events in her debut, The Witch's Daughter (2011). Elizabeth leaves the Summerlands to protect Teganher previous protegee, now a mature, talented witchwhen ruthless warlock Gideon Masters breaks free of his metaphysical prison. Coveting Tegan's powers, Gideon abducts her through different time lines, forcing Elizabeth (and Erasmus, a charismatic Time Stepper ) to hunt them through the English Civil War and Victorian London. Tensions rise when Elizabeth must choose between helping Tegan or healing those on the brink of death and disease, and flashbacks offer peeks into the highlights of Tegan's training. Historical-fiction fans will enjoy Brackston's ability to immerse readers in various eras, but perhaps the book's strongest quality is Elizabeth and Tegan's relationship. Though they are separated for all but a few chapters, they never lose faith in one another. With savvy heroines and a final duel between good and evil, this quick read is a spellbinding choice for fantasy devotees and readers happy to find a dash of magic added to English history.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
