      Gr 1-3-The text describes habitats, diets, and the endangered status of each animal. Boldface vocabulary terms are listed in a glossary; a quick facts guide and an index are also included. This series is an excellent choice for readers who want to build their confidence but may not be ready to commit to longer nonfiction texts. The chapters provide a challenge without being overwhelming. Some of the graphic elements, such as maps and diagrams, may be difficult for some beginning readers to interpret. VERDICT An up-to-date series for any library; early literacy collections may want to consider.
